  are added during the year but before the next solicitation
  cycle starts?

Only count those that were actually solicited in the participation numbers.
Only count those that are solicitable as part of the counts. It may not be possible to accurately verify new grad addresses.
You can also fix the number of alumni of record at the beginning of the year so it remains constant.
You may also not make the new grads active in the database for solicitation purposes for 1 year.
Ask your grads for a 5 year pledge and only include those in the active graduate pool.
If you have a senior class campaign count those who have made a gift in your totals.
