 Manager of Development Research and Information Systems

This is manager position in the Development Team, reporting to the Director of the Annual Fund to secure philanthropic support for the campaign and annual fund.

Position Description:

Plan, implement and direct a comprehensive program to address activities associated with moving prospects and benefactors along the giving continuum.

This position will also maintain donor database integrity, and act as the liaison to the Information Systems Department for Development.

The Manager's role is proactive in expanding the pool of potential prospects and also reactive and responsive to research requests from the development office and the office of the president.

Oversee the research area, working with Development Staff to set priorities against institutional goals, including planning for the Campaign.


Prospect Research of Corporations, Individuals, & Foundations:
  • Assure the integrity and timeliness of Campaign information
  • Assess & anticipate needs for information, monitoring & reporting
  • Analyze database to identify major gift prospect for solicitation assignments

Manage campaign donor & prospect systems:

  • Institute a system for information flow to record and monitor moves management activities, including executive, board, and volunteer assignments & activities.
  • Create in-depth biographical and financial profiles on major gift prospects
  • Utilize wealth screening for both Campaign & annual fund prospects

Planning & Reporting:

  • Conduct and/or oversee special strategic research projects e.g., data mining, electronic screening, by applying an understanding for the complexities of both individual and institutional prospects and donors.
  • Monitor, analyze and report on progress toward Campaign activity
  • Develop and issue monthly analyses
  • Maintain & execute Raiser's Edge prospect research capabilities & efficiency to track prospects
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures for research & moves management for the Development Office to ensure prospects are being developed to become donors.
  • Establish benchmarking to evaluate effectiveness of research
  • Set annual goals for number of prospects and potential fundraising


  • Develops and cultivates relationships with front line Development staff to encourage feedback on types of programs and services desired. Plans and implements programs designed to meet the needs of these staff.
  • Takes a lead role in prospect identification and review committees designed to find and identify prospects and create cultivation, solicitation and donor relations strategies.
  • Identify needs and initiate activities to support executives, board and volunteers
  • Participate in  preparation for board Campaign meetings and attend as needed

Prospect Development & Management:

  • Conceptualize projects that result in new prospects for all components of the Campaign.
  • Develops expertise in institutional programs and develop external resources to monitor and track industry specific changes that our relevant to our mission.
  • Plan, prepare and recommend annual budgets for research that will enhance research capabilities, such as online biographical/financial databases or newspaper subscriptions.
  • Serve as research resource for the Office of the President to support board nominating committee activity
  • Special projects as assigned by VP of Development and Development Officers

Database Management & Information Systems:

  • Be Development liaison with top IS personnel to develop and enhance Development operations related to technology, such as integrating other systems to the donor database and handling internal PC issues
  • Coordinate new staff orientation on Raiser's Edge, as well as, facilitate continuing education opportunities for Raiser's Edge, Microsoft Office, and other technical applications.
  • Plan, prepare and recommend annual budgets for Development Office technology, such as printer and PC evaluation
  • Serve as Raiser's Edge database administrator by facilitating Raiser's Edge upgrades, handling NCOA updates, and taking steps to protect data


  • 4-6 years experience in Prospect Research
  • BA/BS required
  • Possess a comprehensive understanding of the research tools utilized and the fundamentals involved with performing fundraising research, such as Wealth Engine, Hoovers, electronic screenings, etc.
  • Knowledge of basic principles and techniques relevant to major gift fundraising
  • Ability to analyze and synthesize information
  • Must be able to write concise research documents with attention to accuracy and detail
  • Highly Proficient in Microsoft Office applications
  • Self motivated to work independently and with the team
  • Database management knowledge and experience essential - Raiser's Edge a plus
  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with technical support providers, management and end-users
  • Solid Internet skills including knowledge of product development and evolution of the World Wide Web
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and meet deadlines
  • Initiative and excellent organization skills necessary
  • A good sense of humor
  • A commitment to working with the Development Office to help improve the quality of life of individuals
